Been Remote: A Knowledge Base For Remote Resources

I couldn’t just leave it all in my brain. Especially knowing how my sober brain isn’t really the best place to keep original copies of things.

Besides, I had new job interviews to think about, and vastly more experience than my job titles suggested.

After 5 years building a 75-person, 125-article per week publishing team, I was newly independent and much like a foreign language, could already feel the muscle memory of the daily hustle starting to slip away.

I needed to get it all on paper, so i started beenremote.com, a resource area for remote workers who are embedded in the tech industry like I have been for 20 years.

A Digital Garden Turned into An Expert Space

Been Remote started as a digital garden, a beautiful, small thing that evolves with the appropriate care. Gardens teach you progress over perfection, that things grow in stages, and not everything blooms at once.

It needs tending but is not required. It’s not rushed. It conjures thoughts of patience, nurturing, and the idea that good things take time.

Things grow, things die, things come back again. A garden teaches us about cycles, resilience, and letting go. It belongs to nature but also feels deeply personal.

Since I’ve started it, it’s evolved from my little personal space into one where we proudly pay our contributors for their expertise, becoming a tool for others to grow their bylines and show their expertise. We all have a remote story to share.

I Want To Tell The Truth

Let’s also be real, we need a place to talk about the hard truths of remote work. As the tech industry has totally been perverted by unicorn targets and hustle culture, marginalized people bear the brunt of this tension much more than others. And you aren’t going to hear those stories on LinkedIn.

I was inspired by “Ask a Manager,” a place where Alison has earned an incredible amount of respect and authority by answering reader questions in her simple, fair, and empathetic way.

The messy middle - managers are employees too. I write for those in leadership who are seeking guidance and support as they bear the pressure of being a fulcrum between everyone relying on you below you, and everyone above you with expectations.

The honest CEO - I have reported to CEOs for my entire career, and the patterns I’ve witnessed tend to happen over and over again without fail. I write for the CEO that is willing to look the mirror and be real with themselves.
